Remembering our village men who died in 1917

Our villages lost four men during 1917 and their brief stories are told here. They were Private Edgar Whichello from the Royal Berkshire Regiment, Able Seaman Albert William Lewington from the Nelson Battalion Royal Naval Reserve, Private Frederick (Fred) Elderfield from the 1st Battalion (The Buffs) East Kent Regiment and Private Claude Clement Lillington of the 2nd Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment.

Claude lived at Sheencroft between Aston Upthorpe and Blewbury and enlisted to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment. He was killed on the 31st July 1917 which is the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres, otherwise known as Passchendaele.
