Astons ultrafast broadband project

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)

Openreach is putting fibre cables throughout the Astons in preparation for connecting fibre to our premises (FTTP)*.  We are benefitting from the UK Government's Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme for Rural Communities.

In late summer, Openreach told us that the fibre cabling would be completed by the end of 2022.

*FTTP is a full fibre connection to each of the Astons premises and is also known as Ultrafast Broadband. One gigabit is the same as 1,000 megabits.)   It’s a big leap forward in connection speeds and reliability from the fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) service that the Astons currently receives.

Openreach have told us that they will use the existing routes to premises by replacing the current copper only cables with fibre and copper combined cables.  Existing routes are overhead cables from poles to premises and underground ducts.

All premises in Aston Tirrold and Aston Upthorpe parishes will be able to have FTTP from this project except:

  • Carrimers, Upper Hill, Lower Hill farms and associated premises which will receive FTTP through another Oxfordshire programme which is currently being rolled out:
  • Five Aston Tirrold residences near South Moreton which are connected to Didcot telephone exchange not the Blewbury exchange like the rest of us. We understand however that the Moretons may well start a similar FTTP project and we’ve asked for these five premises to be included

A steering group of Astons residents is coordinating the project:

Tracey Briggs - project overseer
Bruno Brunskill - Oxfordshire CC liaison
Neil Carter - Parish Council liaison
Laura Cubiss - technical architect
Kathryn Hawkey - community liaison
Henry Weeks - Parish Council liaison

The steering group collects some personal data from Astons residents.
